Justin Bieber Retires? Or He Doesn't. What?

Among a heavy campaign promoting his new album and movie this week, Justin Bieber came out with the announcement of his retirement. Can it be? As I discussed yesterday, probably not, but with so much happening this week it's a good way to get into another news cycle. Never underestimate the effect of a bit of decent marketing. Meanwhile, the film, which documents Bieber's most recent Believe Tour, has opened to mixed reviews.

Justin Bieber Calls It Quits? Yeah Right

So it looks like Justin Bieber wasn't just kidding when he supposedly joked around in an interview last week about retiring. It's actually happened, according to a Tweet that Biebs sent out on Christmas Eve:

However, as I've stated on this blog before, there's not really such a thing as retirement from the music industry (right, Cher?). Whether they get bored or into financial difficulties, artists usually seem to come back in some way or another before long. So, too, will it be the case with Bieber.

In fact, later tweets seem to be in contradiction to the retirement announcement:

The Biebs is Retiring

Could it be? Is Justin Bieber quitting music for good? ... No, no he's not. But that didn't stop him from joking around during an interview with Power 106 FM in Los Angeles. When asked his plans for his next album, he said he would be "retiring" from music. Naturally, this news upset a lot of Beliebers. How could the Biebs just up and leave? However, his manager cleared the air by saying Bieber was "just kidding." Even in the full version of the interview, Bieber himself says he's joking, but hasty conclusions are more fun.

A few weeks ago I covered just a few of the instances where an artist's behavior ruined a concert for their fans. Of course, terrible concerts tend to be few and far between. Most go off without a hitch and people have a good time. Occasionally, though, the artist or band does something that makes the show extra special, either for a specific fan or the audience as a whole.

Dave Matthews

File this one under "good things come to those who help others," especially when your assistance goes to the guy you're driving to see. Last month singer Dave Matthews was out riding before a concert in Hershey, PA, without a cell phone when the bike developed a flat tire. Emily Kaus, a Dave Matthews Band fan who was heading to the very same concert, and her boyfriend, stopped to help and discovered the subject of their rescue was none other than Matthews himself. So Matthews hitched a ride to the venue with Kaus and boyfriend. The two ended up having dinner with Matthews, and received a backstage visit and front-row seats at the show.

Facebook comment after Justin Bieber arrives late to a concert
A Bieber fan left a comment on our Facebook
wall about an unpleasant experience.

So let's say you're attending a concert for your favorite artist or band. The opening acts have finished and you're sitting (or standing) around getting restless. Now it's been 45 minutes since the opener left the stage and you're still waiting. Finally, an hour and a half later the artists waltzes onto stage. By this point you're probably quite cranky, but maybe that'll be consumed by the energy generated by the fans around you. Maybe.

Okay, so stuff sometimes happens to make an act late. Traffic is heavy. A band member gets sick. The lead man gets a flat tire on his bike and is without a cell phone (spoiler: crisis averted). That's not what I'm talking about, though. What I'm talking about is an artist that is late of their own accord. And it's not all about artists who are late. Sometimes they're just downright rude or abusive to their fans, making for a very bad experience indeed.

This isn't something that happens everyday, but it happens often enough to be worthy of highlighting. So here are five artists who ruined a concert in the last few years by their lateness or bad behavior.

Justin Bieber

It's no secret that pop icon Justin Bieber has upset fans lately. As you can see above, he was over an hour and 45 minutes late for a concert in Des Moines, IA, earlier this month, and it made a lot of fans (and parents) angry. A staff member of the Iowa Event Center where the concert was held said Bieber was scheduled for 9:30pm, making him 25 minutes late, even though the last opening act finished up at 8:30pm.

This wasn't the only time this year, though. It seems that as his star has increased, Bieber has seen fit to mozzy onto the stage whenever he well pleases. At a concert on Friday in Hartford, CT — our backyard — Bieber was more than 40 minutes late. And he was also late in March, April, and May, for concerts in the UK, Germany, and Dubai, respectively.
