August's Top 10 Events

If you guessed that Ringling Bros. would still hold strong in August, you'd be exactly right. So like last month, we'll skip right to the juicy stuff: Garth Brooks. Last month I noted that despite the slow, drip drip way Garth Brooks has announced his tour dates, he wasn't doing so bad. Now that we're a month later, it's time to take a look at how things are going overall.

How has the tour done so far? Well, in order to compare, let's take a look at the other hugely amped tour from this year: Jay-Z & Beyonce. So far, the number of Garth Brooks tickets sold TicketNetwork.com is 71% of the number of tickets sold for the entirety of the On The Run Tour*. That's for a tour that had almost the same number of dates that Brooks' tour currently has released. When you take that into account, it doesn't look so good at first. However, when you remember that he's only released dates for two cities, it starts to look a little better. 71% of the other biggest tour of the year for two cities? I think that's not bad.

July's Top 10 Events

I might say I'm surprised that the Ringling Bros. circus secured another month in the first spot of the TicketNetwork.com Top 10*, but as we all know by now, it's been in a stride for most of the year. So instead of focusing on Ringling Bros. for the discussion about July, I'll skip to the runner-up, Garth Brooks.

Single City and Late Announcement Success

The number of tickets for Brooks sold in July here at TN.com showed that, despite the somewhat unique manner of announcing his tour dates, fans can't wait to see him again. Although the number of tickets sold weren't at the same level as say, Jay-Z & Beyonce from earlier this year, they were at a point where I'm pretty confident saying that, had he released his entire schedule all at once, it likely would have been one of the biggest months for concerts we ever saw.

May's Top 10 Events

The enthusiasm for Disney's hit movie "Frozen" hasn't melted away just yet — not even close. After an ice show adaptation of the film was announced last month, we expected that excitement for the show would be sky high. The question was: To what degree?

Now we know. The May 20 sales date for the show helped propel "Frozen" straight to the top of TN.com's May Top 10 in a way that was almost as effortless as Elsa creating her ice castle. To put it in more glacial terms, on that day Frozen made up almost 40% of all tickets sold on TN.com. That's huge!

It's the kind of number we usually see for a concert onsale for a very popular artist or band (Jay-Z & Beyonce were in this territory). Other than some of the big Broadway productions like The Book of Mormon, or a circus show like Ringling, we don't typically see this kind of thing for theater. It just goes to show: create something catchy and viewers will latch on forever.

Check back tomorrow for more ticketing trends about Frozen, including information about its fortunes during today's individual ticket onsales day.

April's Top 10 Events

I'm quite excited to report that Fleetwood Mac took the lead position for last month's TicketNetwork.com Top 10, as I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to discuss if Ringling Bros. went another month at the top. Last month I wondered if it was possible Paul McCartney might take the top spot like he did in April 2013, but the reuniting of Mac's classic lineup helped boost the band up.

The band's fortunes here at TN.com were assisted by, first and foremost, sales for its two concerts at the TD Garden in Boston, MA. A super-majority of the tickets for that venue were for the first show on October 10. However, the venue wasn't an overwhelming portion of sales. Other venues that brought in many ticket sales for this tour included the United Center in Chicago, IL; The Forum in Inglewood, CA; and the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA.

March's Top 10 Events

Well, it happened. Ample ticket sales at TN.com allowed the Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus to once again claim the top spot on this list. When combined with the last three-month period from July to September, and last March, that gives Ringling a full half year at the top.

As I've mentioned in previous months, it isn't that the other events have done poorly. They've done very well, and in particular the Kiss & Def Leppard and the Eminem & Rihanna tours were neck and neck for the second position. It's just that so many more Ringling Bros. tickets were sold during March.

It is possible things will change in April. Last year, Paul McCartney displaced Ringling Bros. during April, and wouldn't you know, he's plotting more dates this year. Maybe we'll see him claim the top spot again?
