10 Best Holiday Shows

The holiday season is quickly approaching and soon a lot of people will be looking to get into the spirit by visiting spectacular displays of lights and decorations like those in New York's Rockefeller Center, watching classic Christmas movies, and planning all kinds of other activities with a holiday theme.

Why not add a theater show or concert to your list? There are plenty of great productions coming up, so if you're looking to get out of the house (or the cold), you have plenty of options. Here are ten of the best: five concerts and five theater shows.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Christmas songs played in a rock opera style with a laser light show. Can you really ask for more? I don't think you can. TSO has become an annual holiday tradition like no other. It's well worth it to see them, and there are two tours running simultaneously, so there's plenty of opportunity to do so. TSO runs until December 30.

Mannheim Steamroller

Originally known for their new age-inspired instrumentals, Mannheim Steamroller is now better known for their Christmas music. So if you're looking for Christmas classics with a new age twist, Mannheim is your band! Like TSO, Mannheim is running two tours at the same time and also plays until December 30.

Boston Pops

Made up of members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops play a series of Holiday Pops shows every year. This year the Holiday Pops shows run from December 7 – 11. There are also pops orchestras with holiday shows in many other cities, so if you're not from or traveling to Boston, be sure to find one near you.

Z100's Jingle Ball

This is the biggest star-studded show of the season! Featuring Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, LMFAO, David Guetta, Foster the People, and more, it will take place at Madison Square Garden on December 9.

B96 Jingle Bash

B96's Jingle Bash is kind of like Z100's Jingle Ball, only in Chicago instead of New York. Selena Gomez, Joe Jonas (of Jonas Brothers fame), LMFAO, Enrique Iglesias, Jason Derulo, Cobra Starship, Karmin, and Kevin Cahill will take the stage on December 17

This list only scratches the surface of what's available. Be sure to check out our holiday concerts guide for more.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular

An annual classic, Radio City features the Rockettes, a troupe of dancers who take viewers through scene after scene of a Christmas wonderland. This year the production has added a new 3D scene. Other than the well-known New York show, there are also productions in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Radio City runs through January 2.

White Christmas

White Christmas is a musical based off the film of the same name, with music by Irving Berlin. It tells the story of two entertainers who help their former army commanding officer bring business to his inn by getting people from their division to stay there. There are White Christmas productions in Arizona, California, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas through the New Year.

A Christmas Story

"You'll shoot your eye out!" Based on the classic movie about a boy's desire to get a Red Ryder B.B. gun for Christmas, A Christmas Story was adapted to the stage in 2000. This year A Christmas Story has productions in eight states until December 30.

A Christmas Carol

One of the world's best known Christmas stories, the Charles Dickens tale about a businessman's visit from three ghosts that help him change his miserly ways is being played in cities all across the United States until January 1.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Grinch hates Christmas so much that he doesn't want his neighbors the Whos to celebrate it. So he tries to steal it but ultimately finds the task more difficult than anticipated. The classic Dr. Seuss story is being played in Providence, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, and Saint Louis through New Years' Eve.
