As I was surfing the World Wide Web the other day, I came across the latest viral video of the hilarious Stephen Colbert before he hit it big, in a commercial for a Nebraska bank. As you can see from the video above, the commercial itself is not funny, but what makes the video engrossing is the fact that it is THE Stephen Colbert, the hater of bears and the proprietor of truthiness, hawking a local bank.
As I continued to ride the YouTube wave of videos, I started to look up some other big-time celebrities in their small-time beginnings and I found some good ones. Here is just some of what I found (in no particular order):
Lady Gaga is one of the most popular recording artists today, but she appeared on MTV's "Boiling Points" back in 2005, when she was still known as Stefani Germanotta. As you can see when you watch the video, Ms. Gaga was not able to keep a "Poker Face" when she came back from using her "Telephone" and her food had trash on it. Little did she know that there were "Paparazzi" watching her reaction from hidden cameras. Three Gaga song references in one paragraph, BOOM!
R&B singer Drake just released his sophomore album "Take Care," but before he hit it big with his music career, he was capturing the hearts of Canadian teeny-boppers in the teen drama "DeGrassi." In the scene I found, Drake's acting prowess was truly tested as he had to act like he got shot. The over-dramatic drop to his knees really is the best part for me. I wonder if getting fake shot on television has gotten him any street cred in the music industry?
Mickey Mouse Club
Wow. All I can say is, "Wow." I knew that the Mickey Mouse Club has made stars out of a lot of their cast members, but I counted six (!) from this 1993 opening theme video. Like I said, I'm pretty sure I knew about Justin, Britney and Christina, but I had no idea about Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell. After watching this video a few times, I did begin to think about how bitter I would be if I were one of the cast members that didn't make it big. Needless to say, I could have been the next J.C. Chasez!
Mark me down as someone who could watch "Seinfeld" in syndication every day. It's arguably the greatest comedy show in television history, but this clip of Jerry on the show "Benson" in the early '80s is kind of brutal to watch. You know you are looking at Jerry Seinfeld, but with the jokes he delivered (even as lame as they were intended to be), I'm glad he had some time for his comedy to evolve. I mean, he was definitely upstaged by that little girl. Where is George Constanza when you need him?
Judging by this video, JLo has always had some serious skills. I'm not sure anyone would have guessed that she would have turned into the entertainment mogul she is now, but still, she sure can dance. By the way, was that really the cool way to dress in the '90s? I grew up in the '90s, and if clothes like that are how our kids are going to view us, we are all in deep, deep trouble. I digress; Jennifer Lopez = good dancer.
Do you know of any other videos of stars before they hit the big time? Let me know in the comments!!
