View Comments(0) has always looked for ways to give back to the community, so we are proud to announce the " Cares" initiative, which will highlight great charities, both local and national. We kick it off today with a local charity walk that benefits the American Brain Tumor Association, a non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to brain tumor research and patient care.

A letter from the charity:

Life changes every day, but who could imagine the life change that we encountered on February 1, 2006. That was the day that Steve underwent neurosurgery and was diagnosed with glioblastoma....just a word at that point, but what we soon learned was horrifying:

  • malignant brain tumor
  • treatable but not curable
  • statistics that we don't even want to hear about

"Accept the diagnosis; Defy the prognosis." That is the mantra that our family immediately adopted!

Steve's strength, determination and courage have been an inspiration to everyone! He has pulled that strength from the love and support that he continues to get from friends, family and colleagues. That love and support has brought us to tears.

Steve refuses to let you all down in the fight of his life. We can't thank you enough for the love and caring that you have shared with us.

Steve is one of the 44,500 people in the United States who are diagnosed with brain tumors each year; almost 3,500 of these patients are children. Steve, his family, and hundreds of friends and supporters participate each year in the Sharing Hope Walk. Connecticut's Sharing Hope Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, 2012, at the UConn Alumni Center in Storrs, CT. All proceeds will benefit research programs of the American Brain Tumor Association. There is no fee to attend the event, but of course donations are welcome.

We encourage you to join us on June 9 to support the American Brain Tumor Association at the Sharing Hope Walk. You can get in on the fun by clicking on the "Register Today" button above. If you can't make it to the event, but would still like to help, feel free to do so by clicking on the "Make A Donation" button.

Event Day Information: Registration starts at 10AM, followed by an approximately 2-mile walk, with raffles and refreshments afterwards. This will be TicketNetwork's second year as a sponsor and we are super excited to be a part of this awesome event! TicketNetwork will be providing an event package gift basket that will be used as one of many amazing raffle items!
