Fenway Park in Boston is continuing its annual summer concert series this year with two classic artists. On Friday, Bruce Springsteen announced that he is heading to Fenway on August 14 as part of his Wrecking Ball Tour. Roger Waters, currently on his The Wall Live Tour, also has a scheduled a concert at the park on July 1.
Springsteen's announcement brings things full circle, as he was the first artist scheduled to play a show at the park when it began hosting concerts on September 6, 2003, but he wasn't actually the first to appear at the park. Here's a quick look at the highlights:
1999 - Limp Bizkit
That's right, Limp Bizkit was actually the first band to perform at the park, albeit without permission. On Sunday, June 13, 1999, the band climbed atop the roof of the Fenway parking garage and proceeded to play a 5-song set before the unauthorized concert was discovered by police. By the time authorities got to the park, 1,500 fans had flocked to see the band play, creating a traffic jam.
2003 - Bruce Springsteen
As noted above, The Boss' appearance was the first official concert at the park. At the time, Springsteen was enjoying the success of The Rising, his first studio album in seven years.
2007 - The Police, John Legend & Buffalo Tom
The Police came to Fenway in 2007 as part of their one-time reunion tour. Soul artist John Legend also appeared later in the summer as part of a benefit concert.
2009 - The Dave Matthews Band & Willie Nelson, Phish, Paul McCartney & MGMT, Disturbed
This year was huge for the concert series. Memorial Day weekend featured the Dave Matthews Band (playing at Fenway for the second time) for two shows on May 29 and 30, with Willie Nelson as a supporting act on May 29. Phish picked it up the next day on May 31. Three months later, on August 5 and 6, Paul McCartney graced the stadium with his presence, with MGMT in tow. Finally, on October 28, Disturbed played a concert.
2011 - NKOTBSB, Dropkick Murphys
Last year's series was once again a packed one. It saw the two boy band powerhouses of the late '90s/early '00s come to the park, with the New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys duo playing a set in June. In September, Dropkick Murphys came to Fenway supported by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Street Dogs.
Other bands to appear at Fenway include Jimmy Buffett, The Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond, and Aerosmith.
Have you seen an artist play at Fenway? Who? Also, who would you like to see come to Fenway?
