London’s West End is one of the greatest hubs of theatrical entertainment in the world. It has borne unforgettable screenwriters, actors, directors and choreographers. Over the years the West End has housed some incredible plays and musicals, and in this article we are going to share with you the top five performances you can’t afford to miss this coming season.

Billy Elliot, Victoria Palace

Billy Elliot is a young school boy who dreams of one day becoming a ballerina. However, his journey of rising to the top of his profession puts relationships in turmoil as he turns his back on boxing to pursue his passion. First performed at London’s West End, Billy Elliot has continued to touch the hearts of thousands and now can be watched across the world.

Les Misérables, Queen’s Theatre

Offering London the second major production and having been performed for over 25 years, it is no wonder why this one of the greatest shows to see at the West End. Les Misérables will please any audience; acting out the French Revolution, whilst playing on the themes of fraud and star crossed lovers — there truly is something for everyone in this incredible story. The multi award-winning musical offers the chance to listen to powerful voices, watch show-stopping acting, shed a tear or two and even roll on the floor with laughter. It is the rollercoaster ride of emotion that has made Les Misérables one of the most spectacular shows ever performed live on stage.

Phantom of the Opera, Her Majesty’s Theatre

Christine soon becomes the star of the show after her angel of music, The Phantom, shows her how to project her voice, in the hope that she will return his love. However, after being reunited with her childhood sweetheart, The Phantom realises that her heart will never belong to him and instead turns to murder. The Phantom of the Opera was first performed at London’s West End and is an unforgettable love story that has entranced audiences across the world.

Mamma Mia!, Novello Theatre

Bringing to life the magic behind ABBA’s greatest hits, Mamma Mia! tells a story of a young girl in search for her long lost father. Entertaining, smart and funny, this musical will have you all singing along to each and every ABBA hit. From Super Trooper to Dancing Queen, this is one feel good musical that was first performed at the West End and captivated the hearts of more than 50 million people.

Jersey Boys, Prince Edward Theatre

The internationally acclaimed hit musical, Jersey Boys, tells the story of four boys who rose to stardom. Relive the rock ‘n’ roll days with the help of hits such as “Beggin’”, “Sherry, Big Girl’s Don’t Cry” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, along with many other songs that turned Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons into worldwide heartthrobs.
