Pop stars Shakira and Rihanna made headlines recently when they teamed up for a duet, "Can't Remember to Forget You," and a subsequently racy video to go along with it. Recently, fellow singers Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera teamed up for a remix of Gaga's single "Do What U Want." I'm all about duets between female pop stars because I think it rails against the idea that two women doing similar things must automatically be in competition with one another &mdahs; and because the songs are always so good. Here are 5 other duets we should celebrate, in honor of Shakira/Rihanna and Gaga/Christina!
#1: Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, "When You Believe"
Let's start this list off right with two of the best singers of all time! Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have long been lauded for their incredible vocals — unfortunately, with that came rumors that they hated each other. They decided to show everyone how much they really did hate each other by teaming up for this song from the Dreamworks film, "The Prince of Egypt."
#2: Beyonce and Lady Gaga, "Telephone"
These two have teamed up twice, both for Gaga's "Telephone" and Beyonce's "Video Phone." Both songs could have rightfully made the list, but there's something extra fun about the video for "Telephone," which features both singers in a "Thelma and Louise"-esque friendship.
#3: Britney Spears and Madonna, "Me Against the Music"
Britney Spears has always been open about the fact that she idolizes Madonna. This song was released right on the heels of their legendary performance with Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMAs. In fact, it was during the rehearsals for that iconic show that Spears asked Madonna to sing on the track.
#4: Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, "Fly"
This song is often forgotten when it comes to great female duets, but it's one of my favorites. The single is off Nicki Minaj's debut album, Pink Friday; although Rihanna's contribution was a last-minute addition, it helped take the song to the next level.
#5: Brandy and Monica, "The Boy Is Mine"
It wouldn't be a complete list without this 1998 song from Brandy and Monica. This was one of the quintessential '90s pop songs and inspired fights between tweens around the world as they argued over who got to sing Brandy's part vs. who got to sing Monica's part. The video is pretty great, too; all that '90s fashion AND the two team up in the end against the guy.
