Musical theatre incorporates any combination of songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance in order to convey a story. Known as "musicals" since the early 20th century, musical theatre often overlaps with opera and dance. Early musicals included Show Boat in 1927 and Oklahoma! in 1943. Since then, the genre has expanded and its productions have become some of the most prolific, with titles like Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and The Producers ranking among the best of all time.
Many of those shows, like Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera, continue to run today. Other big musicals range from kid-friendly shows, including Dora the Explorer Live! to grandiose Disney shows, such as The Lion King. The Book of Mormon, a comedic musical from the creators of "South Park" has quickly risen to be one of Broadway's best-sellers, as of late, while "Jersey Boys" has been going so strong it's already booked well into 2014.
