Many bands tell stories about their smalltown upbringing, but very few can say that they have had quite the same experience as the band 3 Doors Down. 3 Doors Down's story is a perfect example of the "American Dream," little people from a small town who launch themselves into the big time. The members of 3 Doors Down grew up together in the small town of Escatawpa, Mississippi, which has a population of just over three thousand five hundred residents. The original members of the band began playing together and performing in the late 1990s, and their single "Kryptonite" launched 3 Doors Down into mainstream music culture. 3 Doors Down was able to ride the success of one single on their way to the mainstream; now 3 Doors Down perform hundreds of concerts a year, in front of more people at each concert than live in their entire hometown.
When 3 Doors Down put out the single "Kryptonite," they likely never suspected that a song that became a hit on a local radio station in Biloxi, Mississippi, would ultimately result in a recording contract and worldwide fame! When "Kryptonite" was released, 3 Doors Down quickly made a name for themselves around their hometown and surrounding areas, gathering a steady following for their local live shows. 3 Doors Down became local celebrities, and they can thank their hometown fans for their rise to worldwide stardom! Their incredibly popular local shows eventually landed them a gig at the famous New York City club CBGB. The incredible performance by 3 Doors Down at CBGB caught the attention of Universal Records, which resulted in a major record deal. Shortly after 3 Doors Down signed their record deal, the band released The Better Life (2000), which in addition to "Kryptonite" also included the top ten rock songs "Loser," "Duck and Run" and "Be Like That." 3 Doors Down's first album would go on to be certified six times platinum and reach #7 on the Billboard charts, an incredible accomplishment for a newcomer to the popular music scene.
Two years later, 3 Doors Down released their follow-up album Away from the Sun (2002), and once again they found themselves at the top of the Billboard charts. The top-ten album went multi-platinum and gave 3 Doors Down two more top-five singles with "When I'm Gone" and "Here Without You." 3 Doors Down successfully avoided the dreaded sophomore slump for bands, proving they were here to stay and that they wouldn't be one-hit wonders. Further proving their staying power, 3 Doors Down have successfully released another two albums. Their 2005 album Seventeen Days became the first #1 album for the group, when it premiered at the top of the charts; once again, 3 Doors Down attained platinum status. 3 Doors Down then followed that up with their fourth record, the self-titled 3 Doors Down, which reached #1 in its first week, selling over 150,000 copies.
If there is one thing to be learned from 3 Doors Down, it is that just because you have small-town roots doesn't mean you're incapable of achieving your big dreams. 3 Doors Down dreamt big, followed their passion, and now tour worldwide for hundreds of thousands of fans.
