If you love Dolly Parton (and even if you don't love country music, who doesn't love Dolly?), then you'll be delighted to see the Broadway musical 9 to 5 when it opens on Broadway in April 2009. The show received a great deal of positive reviews from its pre-NYC trial run in September and October in Los Angeles. Among the positive reviews listed on the official website 9to5theMusical.com is a review by the infamous celebrity blogger Perez Hilton; he calls 9 to 5 the Musical "super fun!" Now the production is preparing for its Broadway debut, tweaking things about the show to make it ready for the Big Apple. Fans of the 1980 movie starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman will love the stage musical. Not only is 9 to 5 the Musical very true to the original, it brings to the stage a story that was meant for the big lights of Broadway. With music and lyrics for the show written by Dolly Parton, you know that if the queen of flashy performances has her bejeweled fingers in the project, it is going to be big in the best way possible. Dolly was in attendance at the first two Los Angeles premiers of 9 to 5, so you can be fairly certain she may be at the first few performances in New York! 9 to 5 tickets are going to be scarce in general for the first several months of performances, and even harder to get for the nights Dolly may be in attendance. Don't miss your chance to snag the tickets for optimum 9 to 5 seating, check out our selection of cheap 9 to 5 tickets and get them before they're gone.

In an article for NYTimes.com, Matt Ritchell reports on the end of a battle between technology companies and traditional media giants, over the possible opening of a spectrum of radio frequencies for use. Media giants believed that the use of those frequencies by new technology devices would interfere with wireless microphones during concert and theatre productions, in addition to possible TV interference. In this particular battle, music industry giant Dolly Parton (whose interest in Broadway has increased since 9 to 5 the Musical is slated for the NYC stage in April) wrote a letter to the F.C.C. to ask that the spectrum not be opened up, while the CEO of Google sent his own letter in favor of it. - Read More »
In a blog post for ArtsJournal.com, Amanda Ameer discusses the unique variety of reviews 9 to 5 the Musical has up on the official website. Ameer applauds the website for not being afraid to have reviews from those other than the usual critics. In addition to having reviews sent live via text-message by audience members after preview shows in October, snarky internet pop culture blogger Perez Hilton's review is included as a "critic" review, along side the LA Times. - Read More »
In an article for Playbill.com, Kenneth Jones discusses the trial run of 9 to 5 the Musical in Los Angeles, and its impending move to Broadway in April. - Read More »
In 1980, a little movie about how three women in an office refuse to be patronized by their "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" of a boss any longer was released in theaters. That movie was called Nine To Five, and the reception for the comedy was very positive. It's hard to turn your nose up at a "girl power" movie with a sense of humor, and Dolly Parton's ability to poke fun at herself comes through in a genuine and hilarious way. When the three women reach a boiling point, their boss finds himself in hot water. After an evening of fantasizing about how they would kill their boss if they could, the characters played by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton eventually end up kidnapping him, holding him prisoner, and running the workplace their way. After over 25 years, Nine to Five is still a hilariously entertaining movie, and the stage musical has lived up to its predecessor in every way. That may have to do with the fact that Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and music for the show herself, and had a hand in its development for Broadway. Her hit song (the title song for the 1980 film) "Workin' Nine to Five" is in the show, and the 9 to 5 lyrics will be familiar to fans of Dolly Parton's work.
The 9 to 5 cast is incredibly talented, bringing a new sense of vivacity into the characters from the film. It doesn't hurt that Dolly Parton was there to help coach them along the way, either! She has a personal interest in the production, and first-hand experience with the characters. According to Wikipedia, Jane Fonda wrote in her autobiography that Dolly Parton memorized the entire movie script before shooting began-now that's commitment! 9 to 5 the Musical went through its pre-Broadway trial in Los Angeles during September and October 2008, where it was met with rave reviews. 9 to 5 tickets for opening night were incredibly hard to come by, due to rumors that Dolly would be in the audience. For the first performance, a technical glitch stopped the show during Act 1 but the audience still walked out with positive things to say--thanks mostly to Dolly Parton, who saved the show! The LA Times reported that Dolly Parton (who was in the audience with Dabney Coleman, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin to watch the opening of 9 to 5) grabbed a mic from a nearby bodyguard and belted out "Workin' Nine to Five," and nearly started on "I Will Always Love You" before the show got back on track. The run of 9 to 5 the Musical in LA proved that it was up to snuff for Broadway, and the show is being tweaked for its upcoming debut in NYC in April 2009.
