About Kanye West
Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia. He became interested in music as a child, when he began writing, rhyming, and making beats. When he was just 20 years old, Kanye West co-produced tracks for Harlem World and the Mad Rapper. Perhaps the ticket to Kanye West's success are his undeniable skills at beatmaking. These skills earned him the attention of Roc-a-Fella Records, where he became the go-to guy for consistently producing hot tracks. At Roc-a-Fella, Kanye West collaborated with artists like Talib Kweli, Cam'ron, Scarface, Paul Wall, Common, Jermaine Dupri, The Game, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Mobb Deep, and John Legend.
Kanye West received his big break when he collaborated with Jay-Z on his album The Blueprint (2001), which included the songs "Takeover" and "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)." From the success of this album, Kanye West landed a contract with Roc-a-Fella in 2002. Unfortunately, the release of his debut album, on which he would rap and produce, was delayed several times. This was partially because Kanye West was involved in a near-fatal car crash in October of 2002, which fractured his jaw in three places.
Despite this setback, Kanye West prevailed, and even based a single on his accident. That song, "Through the Wire," became the lead track on his first album, The College Dropout. The album was released on February 10, 2004, and has since sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Following the success of this album, Kanye West also received 10 Grammy nominations in 2005, and won Best R&B Song, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album.
In August of 2005, Kanye West released his second album, called Late Registration. The album has gone triple platinum, and contains a string of hit singles including "Diamonds in Sierra Leone," "Gold Digger," "Heard 'Em Say," and "Touch the Sky." Following the success of this album, Kanye West created his own record label, called GOOD (Getting Out Our Dreams) Music, which is affiliated with Sony BMG. Some notable artists that belong to the label include Common, John Legend, Consequence, Fonzworth Bentley, GLC, Tony Williams, and Sa-Ra Creative Partners.
On September 11, 2007, Kanye West released his third studio album, Graduation, which has sold over two million copies to date. The album features the singles "Can't Tell Me Nothing," "Stronger," "Good Life," "Flashing Lights," and "Homecoming." About a month following the release of the album, Kanye West's mother, Donda West, passed away due to complications from cosmetic surgery. Kanye West has since honored his mother by performing her tribute song, "Hey Mama," and a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" on each date of his Glow in the Dark tour.
