The musical A Chorus Line originated from recorded workshop sessions of actual Broadway dancers, called "gypsies," discussing their lives and careers. With book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and choreography by Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line is arguably one of the greatest shows to have ever appeared on Broadway.
A Chorus Line debuted off-Broadway at the Public Theater on May 21, 1975. Demand for tickets to see A Chorus Line was so high that the entire run sold out instantly. On July 25 of the same year, A Chorus Line moved to the Shubert Theatre on Broadway (where Monty Python's Spamalot is playing now), where it ran until April of 1990. The over 6,000 performances of A Chorus Line at the Shubert Theatre earned the musical the distinction of being the longest-running show on Broadway up until that point.
A Chorus Line earned 12 Tony Award nominations in 1976 and won nine: Best Musical, Best Musical Book, Best Musical Score, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Director of a Musical, Best Lighting Design, and Best Choreography. A Chorus Line also won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, an honor shared with only six other musicals: Of Thee I Sing (1932) South Pacific (1950), Fiorello! (1960), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1962), Sunday in the Park with George (1985), and Rent (1996).
The story of A Chorus Line follows 17 dancers as they audition for just 8 positions in a Broadway dance ensemble. Songs like "I Hope I Get It," "One," and "What I Did for Love" will delight the audience as the characters reveal information about their personal lives, their families, friends, and lovers, and their careers. Watch in wonder as A Chorus Line returns to the Broadway stage for the first time in fifteen years. Each dance number is more powerful than the last, and the excitement will build as the dancers near the end of auditions. Get your A Chorus Line tickets from TicketNetwork today, and find out which eight dancers will make the final cut!
