About the Academy of Country Music

There are several country music groups in America today. In the East, the Country Music Association formed in Nashville, Tennessee. In California, the Academy of Country Music (ACM) promotes country music on the West Coast. The first ACM Awards occurred in 1966; each year, country musicians such as the Dixie Chicks, Keith Urban, Alan Jackson, and Faith Hill win honors and trophies.

In 1964, the Country & Western Music Academy formed in Los Angeles. Later, the organization changed its name to the Academy of Country Music. The group presents annual prizes in several categories, such as Artist of the Decade. In 2008, the Academy announced that George Strait won the Artist of the Decade Award for the 2000s. They honored George Strait in a separate tribute show on April 6, 2009, in Las Vegas.

Often an artist wins the prestigious Entertainer of the Year Award multiple times. Kenny Chesney was Entertainer of the Year annually from 2004 to 2007. Other previous ACM Entertainers of the Year include Garth Brooks, Hank Williams, Jr., Shania Twain, and Toby Keith.
