Formed in 1970, Aerosmith has been among the most commercially successful rock bands of all time, according to the RIAA. 11 out of 14 of the band's studio albums have been certified platinum or above just in the United States, and nine of those are ranked multi-platinum. Additionally, three Aerosmith compilation albums have been certified multi-platinum. Their 1980 compilation Greatest Hits, at 11x platinum, is the band's best selling record. Though initially fairly popular, Aerosmith got their real breakthrough with their third album, Toys in the Attic, which has sold over 8 million copies. The band got through the rest of the '70s with a number of successful hits, and entered the '80s running. However, the band lost original members Joe Perry and Brad Whitford for a brief period, while all the members struggled with various drug addictions. According to All Music, this was partially a reason that the period from 1980-1987 saw a dip in popularity for the band.

Within five years, both Perry and Whitford had returned, and the drug problems had been dealt with, just in time for Aerosmith to come back strong with 1987's Permanent Vacation, which sold over five million units. The following two albums, Pump and Get a Grip sold over 14 million albums combined. From 1997 - 2009 there has noticeable drop in recording activity, with only three albums released. About Aerosmith

Before Aerosmith was formed in 1970, Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry had met in Sunapee, New Hampshire. A year later, Tyler and Perry met again, and gathering together drummer Joey Kramer, bassist Tom Hamilton, and guitarist Ray Tabano, tha band was formed. In 1973, Aerosmith signed with Columbia Records and released their self-titled album. It and the next album, Get Your Wings, were moderate successes, both reaching gold certification shortly after their releases (both sold more albums later when re-released). However, it wasn't until the third album, Toys in the Attic, that the band became international superstars. With over 8 million copies sold, it remains the band's best selling studio album. The 1970s were some of the best times for Aerosmith, with them producing now popular singles such as "Dream On," "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way."

With a successful first decade making music, it seemed like nothing could stop Aerosmith. However, as 1980 approached, issues began to arise. While still very well selling, albums after 1977's Draw in the Line began to drop in popularity. The 1979 album Night in the Ruts only rose to gold in the year following its release, though it still managed to get to number 14 in the charts. By that time, co-founder Joe Perry had left the band due to arguments between him and Tyler. Brad Whitford, who replaced Ray Tabano in 1971, also left the band in 1980. Even worse, the members were succumbing to drug use. The drop in popularity affected sales, and the early 1980s albums Rock in a Hard Place and Done with Mirrors were commercial failures.

Luckily, the news wouldn't continue to be bad for Aerosmith. In 1984, both Perry and Whitford rejoined the band, and all of the members entered rehab to battle their drug addictions. The efforts worked just in time for Aerosmith to make a historic comeback. The 1987 album Permanent Vacation has sold over five million units. The following two albums, Pump and Get a Grip sold over 14 million albums combined. As well as both being top five charting albums, Get A Grip also gave Aerosmith their first number one record. The three albums produced a number of smash hit singles, including "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (#14), "Angel" (#3), "Rag Doll" (#17), Love in an Elevator" (#5) and "Janie's Got a Gun" (#4).

Recent years have seen a noticeable drop in album activity for Aerosmith, with only three released. However, 1997's Nine Lives was quite successful, being certified 2x platinum and reaching number one. Around the same time, the band released their first #1 US 100 single "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." In 2001, Aerosmith released the #2 charting Just Push Play and in 2004 the #5 ranking Honkin' on Bobo. Just Push Play spawned several singles, including "Jaded," which charted at #7. Over the years, the band has frequently performed or recorded with many artists, including Run-DMC, Kid Rock and Guns N' Roses.
