Alice in Chains Biography

Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 when lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell formed a band with drummer Bobby Nesbitt, bassist Mike Starr, and vocalist Layne Staley. Nesbitt was quickly replaced by drummer Sean Kinney. Alice in Chains began playing in clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest and eventually caught the attention of a local promoter who offered to pay for demo recordings. Completed in 1988, the demo, The Treehouse Tapes found its way to the music managers of Soundgarden, who passed the demo to Columbia Records. The following year, Alice in Chains signed a recording contract with Columbia.

Alice in Chains released their debut album, Facelift in 1990. Featuring the singles "We Die Young," "Man in the Box," "Bleed the Freak," and "Sea of Sorrow," the album went on to be certified double-platinum by the RIAA.

Although Facelift was extremely successful, their sophomore album, Dirt was even more so. It was certified four-times platinum by the RIAA, selling 5 million copies worldwide.

Alice in Chains' self-titled album in 1995 would be the group's final album until 2009, and would be the final album to feature Layne Staley. Staley fell into a deep depression following the death of his ex-fiancee and he developed a serious drug issue. In 2002 he was found dead of an overdose at the age of 34.

In 2005, the remaining members of Alice in Chains joined together to perform a benefit concert for victims of the 2004 tsunami disaster in Asia. This eventually led to the group putting on a string of reunion shows with the help of vocalist William DuVall, who replaced Staley.

In 2009, Alice in Chains released their fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue. The band's most recent album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here was released in 2013.
