About Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys was born "Alicia J. Augello-Cook" in Harlem, New York on January 25, 1981. Alicia Keys began playing piano when she was seven, and learned the music of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. At the age of fourteen, Alicia Keys wrote her first song, titled "Butterflyz", which is featured on her debut album, Songs in A Minor (2001). Alicia Keys graduated from the Professional Performing Arts School of Manhattan as the valedictorian of her class at age sixteen. Although she was accepted to Columbia University, she decided to pursue a career in music instead of attending college.

Alicia Keys signed a demo deal with Columbia Records, and produced the single "Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)", which was included on the soundtrack to Men in Black (1997). Soon after, Alicia Keys split from Columbia Records due to creative differences, and signed with Clive Davis to Arista Records instead. Alicia Keys followed Davis to his new J Records label, which has also signed artists like Aretha Franklin, Barry Manilow, Eddie Vedder, and Pearl Jam. Alicia Keys released Songs in A Minor on June 5, 2001. The album went on to sell over ten million copies, and Alicia Keys became the best selling new artist of 2001.

Alicia Keys followed up Songs in A Minor with The Diary of Alicia Keys on December 2, 2003. The album sold over 618,000 copies in its first week, which was the sixth highest album sales achieved by a female artist. Alicia Keys' next two albums were equally successful, with the live album Unplugged (2005) reaching platinum certification, and As I Am (2007) going triple platinum.

Alicia Keys has appeared in a variety of film and television productions, including Charmed (2001), American Dreams (2003), The Nanny Diaries (2007), and The Secret Life of Bees (2008). The list of awards won by Alicia Keys is also very impressive, and she is one of only four female artists to have received five Grammys in one year; the others are Lauryn Hill, Norah Jones, and Beyonce. Some of Alicia Keys' most notable awards are the 2001 Billboard Music Award for Female Artist of the Year, 2002 Grammy for Best New Artist, 2004 World Music Award for Best-Selling R&B Female Artist, and 2006 NAACP Award for Outstanding Female Artist.
