About The Allman Brothers Band

Duane and Gregg Allman (the real Allman brothers) formed a garage band called the Escorts in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1963. They changed their name to the Allman Joys in 1965, and then to the Hourglass when they travelled to Los Angeles to record their first two albums, called Hourglass (1967) and Power of Love (1968). Both albums were rejected by the group's Liberty label, so the band (minus Gregg Allman) headed back to Florida.

In Jacksonville, Duane Allman joined up with Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley from the band Second Coming, Butch Trucks from the band 31st of February, and the drummer Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson. Gregg Allman returned from L.A. to round out the brand new Allman Brothers Band. The group signed to the Capricorn label in 1969, and released their first album, The Allman Brothers Band, that same year. The album achieved great critical acclaim, and was followed up by two others - Idlewild South (1970) and At Fillmore East (1971). These albums contained singles such as "Dreams," "Whipping Post," "Midnight Rider," and "Revival," and established The Allman Brothers Band as the driving force of Southern rock.

Tragically, both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were killed in eerily similar motorcycle accidents in October of 1971 and November of 1972, but the band managed to endure, and released the albums Eat a Peach (1972) and Brothers and Sisters (1973) in quick succession. From this work came some of The Allman Brothers Band's best-known songs, including "Melissa," "Ramblin' Man," and "Jessica." The band enjoyed success and popularity through the mid-seventies, when members began to struggle with inner turmoil and substance abuse issues.

The Allman Brothers Band performed together on and off until the release of the box set Dreams in 1989, which was followed up with a Twentieth Anniversary Reunion Tour. The Allman Brothers Band has toured nationally every year since! Currently consisting of Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks, "Jaimoe" Johanson, Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, Oteil Burbridge, and Derek Trucks, The Allman Brothers Band has been hailed as "one of the most exciting live bands ever to hit the stage."
