The Amazing Johnathan was born John Edward Szeles on September 9, 1958 in Detroit, Michigan. From a young age, Johnathan felt that a future in magic was his lot in life. However, a failed performance in a high school talent show showed Johnathan that "serious magic" might not be the right career path for him. The Amazing Johnathan began his professional career in magic as a street performer in San Francisco, California and gained popularity at Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, California. However, his performance was no better on the streets, until fellow performer Harry Anderson taught Johnathan how to mix comedy into his routine. The modified act became a hit and soon Johnathan moved to nightclubs and colleges.

The Amazing Johnathan has also made many television appearances throughout his career, including Comedy Central's Lounge Lizard and Premium Blend series, HBO's Young Comedians Special, and the Late Show with David Letterman. The Amazing Johnathan's show consists of raw humor combined with illusions, spontaneous magic that often fails to humorous results, and antics that can sometimes test the limits of what is considered inappropriate.

In addition to his live show work, the Amazing Johnathan has wrote a how-to book on practical jokes entitled Every Trick in the Book, which was released in 1997. In addition, a DVD of one of his Comedy Central specials, Wrong on Every Level, was released in 2006. Johnathan has found a home at several venues on the Las Vegas strip, but currently is a resident performer in the Harmon Theater at Krave.
