Amy Grant was born on November 25, 1960, in Augusta, Georgia, but grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. At age 16, Grant released her first album, the eponymous Amy Grant. Although the album was only a modest success, it won her enough of a fan base for many to wait eagerly for her future work. They were not disappointed, for Grant's next album, My Father's Eyes, reached number 19 on the U.S. Christian album chart and has been certified gold by the RIAA. The album also produced a number one single on the Christian singles chart, "Father's Eyes."
Despite Grant's third album, Never Alone, meeting with limited success, all was not a loss. During production of the album she developed a relationship with Myrrh/Word studio songwriter Gary Chapman; the two got married in 1985. Grant finally got her first number one and platinum-certified hit with Age to Age. Though still not a mainstream success, the album was the start of a streak of number one Christian hits that has lasted nearly uninterrupted to this day. Eight out of nine of Amy Grant's studio albums since Age To Age have reached number one on the U.S. Christian album chart (Behind the Eyes was the exception, though it made number two).
Beginning in 1985, Grant experimented with a partial transition to popular music with Unguarded. The album was Grant's second to go platinum. The experiment paid off two albums later with Heart in Motion. The album reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 and has sold over five million copies. It established Amy Grant as an artist that could cross out of her main genre and reach the general population. Yet, despite reaching into mainstream popular music, Grant has remained strongly tied to her Christian roots; two out of three of her latest studio albums, Legacy…Hymns and Faith and Rock of Ages…Hymns and Faith have had strong Christian themes.
Grant divorced from Gary Chapman in 1999 and married country music singer-songwriter Vince Gill in 2000. Besides Chapman and Gill, Grant has worked with songwriter Michael W. Smith since the mid-1980s. Amy Grant is also known for her Christmas albums, and she has released three over the years. Her 1992 Christmas album, Home for Christmas, has been the most successful, reaching number 2 on the Billboard 200 and selling over three million copies.
