Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983 in London, England. She was raised by both her mother and father in the Southgate area of Enfield, London with her brother, Alex. Like the rest of her family, Amy Winehouse was very into music from a young age and especially loved jazz. She received a guitar as a gift when she was 13 years old and soon after began writing music of her own. During the beginning of her career, Amy Winehouse worked as a journalist for the World Entertainment News Network while continuing to sing in a jazz band. Amy Winehouse's friend Tyler James, gave her demo tape to his A&R rep who had been looking for a jazz singer. The demo tape led Amy Winehouse to sign a contract with record label Island/Universal under the management of Simon Fuller's company, 19 Management. After agreeing to the deal, she hired the band, Dap-Kings, to back her up in the studio and on tour.

On October 20, 2003, Amy Winehouse, released her debut album entitled Frank. The album went on to achieve platinum status and Amy Winehouse was nominated for several awards including British Female Solo Artist and British Urban Act at the BRIT Awards. She also won the Ivor Novello songwriting award for Best Contemporary Song with co-writer, Salaam Remi. The release of Frank also led to Amy Winehouse performing at the Glastonbury Festival and the V Festival.

After not writing for over 18 months, Amy Winehouse met producer, Mark Ronson. After her meeting Ronson, Amy Winehouse felt inspired and began writing for her next album. Back to Black was released in the UK on October 30, 2006 and rose to number one on the UK Albums Chart as well as achieved platinum status five times. Amy Winehouse went on to win several more awards for the album including Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year for "Rehab", Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.
