About the Arizona Cardinals

You may not realize this, but the Arizona Cardinals are the oldest football team in the United States. The Cardinals became an organization in 1898, when the Morgan Athletic Club was formed. Over the next 45 years, the team would go through many name changes, starting in 1899 when they became known as the Racine Normals. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame website, Chris O'Brien, the man who originally formed the franchise, purchased used jerseys from the University of Chicago that were a faded maroon red. He described the color as "Cardinal Red," and because they played their games on Racine Street, he decided to change the team's name to the Racine Street Cardinals. From that point forward the team would forever be known as the "Cardinals."

When the NFL was formed in 1920, the Arizona Cardinals (then known as the Chicago Cardinals) became a charter member of the start-up football league. They, along with the Dectur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears), are the only charter members that are still in existence. In the history of the Arizona Cardinals franchise, they have won two NFL Championships, both of which occurred when they were known as the Chicago Cardinals. The first came in 1925 when they beat the Pottsville Maroons, and the second came in 1947 when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles.

It took awhile for the Cardinals to find their way to Arizona, but after stops in Chicago and St. Louis, the franchise finally landed in Arizona when they took root in Phoenix in 1988. It took until 1994 for the team to officially name themselves the Arizona Cardinals.

The team now plays their home games at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. The stadium opened in 2006 and is now one of the premier stadiums in the NFL, and has already hosted a Super Bowl and a BCS Championship Game.

If you are a Cardinals fan, you'll want to make sure you get out the stadium this year and find some great seats to a Cards game soon.
