Aziz Ansari was born in Columbia, SC in 1983 to parents who immigrated to the United States from India. After graduating from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, Ansari enrolled in New York University, where he obtained a marketing degree in the early 2000s. Ansari first began performing standup comedy while he was a student at NYU.
After college, Ansari frequently performed standup at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. In 2005, Ansari began collaborating with Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer, both of whom were members of the improve troupe, Respecto Montalban, which was associated with Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Along with director, Jason Woliner, the four began creating short films.
In 2006, MTV greenlit the crew to create a sketch series for the television network. Titled Human Giant, the show was highly acclaimed, however it only ran for two seasons because Ansari was cast to be on the NBC series Parks and Recreation.
With the launch of Parks and Recreation in 2009, Ansari reached a new level of stardom, thanks to the show’s popularity. Portraying Tom Haveford, a government employee for a fictional Indiana town, Ansari received great praise from critics for his role in the show. Entertainment Weekly named him one of 2009’s “Breakout TV Stars” and Yahoo! placed him at the top spot on their list of “TV MVPS.”
Ansari has also made appearances in numerous films, including Get Him to the Greek, I Love You, Man, 30 Minutes or Less, and Observe and Report. In 2015, Ansari release his first book, Modern Romance: An Investigation, which is about dating in the 2010s.
Along with acting and writing, Ansari has continued to maintain his standup career, often touring across the country. In 2014, he performed on the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival tour as one of the headlining acts. In 2015, Ansari will reprise his role as one of the headliners at this year’s Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival.
