Barbra Streisand Biography

Barbara Streisand, known professionally as Barbra Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. Barbra Streisand's father, who had been a high school teacher, passed away suddenly due to complications from an epileptic seizure at the age of 34, shortly after Barbra Streisand's first birthday. Her mother, who worked as a bookkeeper, struggled to keep food on the table for her family.

Barbra Streisand’s mother sang semi-professionally, and when Barbra Streisand was 13, while on vacation in Upstate New York, she and her mother recorded a few songs on tape, which is when Barbra Streisand realized she wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Even though she had dreams of becoming a professional musician, she had even bigger dreams of making it as an actress. After attending her first Broadway play, The Diary of Anne Frank when she was 14, she began spending free time at the library, studying the biography of stages actresses like Eleanora Duse and Sarah Bernhardt.

By the time she was 16, Barbra Streisand was living on her own, sometimes sleeping on friends' couches to save money. After having difficulty finding acting roles, Barbra Streisand decided it was time to pursue singing professionally instead. She recorded a demo and eventually entered a talent contest at a gay nightclub in Greenwich Village. After winning the contest by unanimous decision, she began singing at the club on a regular basis. Eventually, Barbra Streisand landed a gig at the Bon Soir nightclub, earning $125 a week.

Barbra Streisand never lost her desire to act, and she eventually earned the role of a secretary in the musical comedy, I Can Get It for You Wholesale in 1962. The play received rave reviews and helped Barbra Streisand make a name for herself.

Barbra Streisand eventually signed a contract with Columbia Records, and in 1963, she released her debut studio album, The Barbra Streisand Album. The record reached the top 10 on Billboard charts and won three Grammy Awards. At this point in time, everyone was looking to buy Barbra Streisand tickets. Since then, Barbra Streisand has gone on to release 39 studio albums and has been nominated for 40 Grammy Awards, 10 of which she won. She is one of the best-selling female artists of all time, selling over 245 million albums worldwide, including over 72 million records sold in the United States alone. Barbra Streisand has also starred in multiple movies, such as Funny Girl and What's Up, Doc?.
