Barenaked Ladies formed in Scarborough, Ontario, 1988 when co-founder Ed Robertson invited Steven Page to a gig Robertson's previous band was scheduled to play but forgot about after breaking up. The gig was successful and the duo continued touring as well as releasing demo tapes in hopes of generating a fan base. Over the course of a few years more members joined, including Jim and Andy Creegan and Tyler Stewart. In 1991 the band released its first commercial success, the popularly-titled The Yellow Tape.

Over the course of the next few years Barenaked Ladies enjoyed a high level of success in Canada, with the band's first couple albums, Gordon (1992) and Maybe You Should Drive, charting in the Top 5 of the Canadian album charts. Andy Creegan left the group in 1995 and was replaced by Kevin Hearn. The band finally saw breakthrough success in the United States with 1998's Stunt.

Some of the band's most popular songs include "One Week," The Old Apartment," "Pinch Me," "If I Had $1000000," and "Brian Wilson." In 2009 the band became a quartet when Page left to pursue a solo career.
