B.B. King - History
Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. He became interested in music at a young age, and grew up singing in his church choir and playing the guitar on the street corner for dimes. In 1946, B.B. King moved to Memphis to live with his cousin Bukka White. Bukka White was a celebrated blues performer himself, and he taught B.B. King much about the art of playing the blues.
B.B. King received his big break in 1948, when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM. This led to a steady gig at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in Memphis, and a regular spot on the radio station WDIA. In 1949, B.B. King cut four tracks with Bullet records, and then signed to RPM Records. His first hit, "Three O'Clock Blues," came in 1951, and B.B. King hit the tour circuit shortly thereafter.
During the 1950's, B.B. King produced an astonishing twenty hits, including "You Know I Love You" (1952), "Woke Up This Morning" (1953), "Whole Lotta Love (1954), and "Sweet Little Angel"(1956). He came into national fame in 1969, with the release of "The Thrill is Gone," which also appeared as number 193 on the Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs of All Time. B.B. King remained successful through the 1970's, and was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Also in 1987 came a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, one of fourteen B.B. King has been awarded. He also received the National Medal of Arts in 1990, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006, and an honorary doctorate in music by Brown University in 2007.
B.B. King has recorded over fifty albums, and produced seventy-four hits. He continues to tour extensively, and averages over 250 concerts each year. Now, at age 83, B.B. King is at it again.
