Since 1947, B.B. King has been playing in and influencing the blues genre, along with contributing to the development of dozens of others. Since beginning his career, King has influenced a number of musicians, including Eric Clapton, Jimmi Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, along with many others. Over the years, King has released over thirty albums and held 15,000 performances. He is well known for his custom Gibson ES-335 guitar named "Lucille."

Recognized internationally as the King of Blues, B.B. King is still going strong, even at 83. Continuing on a tradition that has lasted more than 60 years, King has embarked on a tour that will run from December through April. The tour, in support of King's latest album, One Kind Favor, will make stops in 26 towns and cities all across the United States. For three of the tour dates, King will perform with fellow blues legend Buddy Guy.

About B.B. King

Riley B. King, was born on September 26, 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. He became interested in music at a young age, and grew up singing in his church choir and playing the guitar on the street corner for dimes. As a young adult, King's first job was sharecropping for an Indianola, Mississippi planter named Johnson Barrett. It was during this time that he got his first professional exposure to music, singing and playing guitar for the gospel choir "The Famous St. John's Gospel Singers." In 1946, B.B. King moved to Memphis to live with his cousin Bukka White. White was a celebrated blues performer himself, and he taught King much about the art of playing the blues.

B.B. King received his big break in 1948, when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM. This led to a steady gig at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in Memphis, and a regular spot on the radio station WDIA. In 1949, King cut four tracks with Bullet Records, and then signed to RPM Records. His first hit, "Three O'Clock Blues," came in 1951, and B.B. King hit the tour circuit shortly thereafter.

During the 1950's, B.B. King produced an astonishing twenty hits, including 1952's "You Know I Love You", 1953's "Woke Up This Morning", 1954's "Whole Lotta Love", and 1956's "Sweet Little Angel". He came into national fame in 1969, with the release of "The Thrill is Gone," which also appeared as number 193 on the Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs of All Time. B.B. King remained successful through the 1970's, and was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

B.B. King is well known for his custom Gibson ES-355 guitar named "Lucille." He named the guitar after witnessing a fight in a club he was performing at between two men over a woman named Lucille. After a fire started in the club, he risked his life to go back in and retrieve the guitar. He named it Lucille to remind himself not to do that again. Also in 1987 came a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, one of fourteen B.B. King has been awarded. He also received the National Medal of Arts in 1990, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006, and an honorary doctorate in music by Brown University in 2007.

King has worked with many artists and bands from both the blues genre and other genres. In 1988, he joined up with U2 to record the single "When Love Comes to Town" and in 2000 he recorded Riding With the King with long-time collaborator and fellow blues player Eric Clapton. He has also performed on stage with Phish.
