The Beach Boys - Resources

About the Beach Boys

When you look back at the history of rock & roll, it's hard to overlook one of the most influential bands of the past 50 years: The Beach Boys. Founding members Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine gave fans that warm feeling of summer all year long with smooth vocal harmonies. Singing songs about California, surfing, girls and cars, the Beach Boys made their way to being one of the most highly regarded bands in history. Even more than forty years after releasing their first album, the Beach Boys continue to tour around the world.

The Beach Boys signed their first record deal with Capitol Records in June 1962 after recording a four song demo tape. Later that same summer they released the single "Surfin' Safari," which peaked on the Billboard charts at #14, their first top 20 hit. In 1963, the Beach Boys recorded the album Surfin' USA, which featured the title track of the same name. The album reached #2 on the charts, becoming the first Top 5 album for the group. The single reached #3, also a milestone for the group, becoming the first Top 5 single. "Surfin' USA" was named a part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll list. They followed that up with multiple hit singles including "I Get Around," "Help Me, Rhonda" and "California Girls."

No album created by the Beach Boys was as important and influential to music as their release of Pet Sounds. Though the album did not sell well commercially, it did hit #10 on the charts. The album featured the singles "Caroline, No," "God Only Knows" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice." In November 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Pet Sounds the second greatest album, only behind the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. George Martin, Beatles producer, once said, "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened...Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." In the following years, the Beach Boys continued to tour and record albums, with their popularity and importance never wavering.
