Billy Elliot the Musical occurs in the United Kingdom during the Miner's Strike of 1984-1985. Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister, and she refused to give in to union demands. The government had been subsidizing the coal industry, and they decided to close several unprofitable mines. On March 5, 1984, over half of England's coal miners went on strike and walked off the job. The son of a coal miner, Billy Elliot has no mother and an unemployed father.
In the working class world of 1984, boys were expected to be masculine, work in the coal mines, and love to box. But Billy Elliot is a terrible boxer who secretly wants to dance. One day, he wanders into Mrs. Wilkinson's ballet class. The students are all girls, but Billy is intrigued. He starts sneaking to ballet classes without telling his family, who are too busy with the coal strikes to notice anything at first. The audience at Billy Elliot shows knows that it's only a matter of time before Dad finds out his son dances ballet, and that will change everything.
Quickly approaching its fifth year in production, Billy Elliot has been the recipient of rave reviews and over two dozen awards. It has won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, and that's just getting started! The musical has also won awards in the United Kingdom and Australia. The story is based on the 2000 British drama film of the same name, and the book is written by Lee Hall, who also wrote the film. The show has received positive reviews from The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, and the LA Times, among others. With a new production opening in Chicago in 2010, the show's popularity is likely to increase.
