About Billy Joel

Legendary singer and songwriter Billy Joel has been entertaining audiences around the world for over thirty years. His classical training and admiration of Broadway helped Joel form his unique spin on Rock & Roll. Now Billy Joel continues to tour around the world as fans of all ages still love his music.

Billy Joel was born in the Bronx, New York in 1949 before moving and growing up in a suburb of Long Island. For much of his adolescence he studied piano, and upon seeing the Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show he made the decision to pursue a career in music. Before going out on his own, Joel joined multiple groups including The Lost Souls, The Hassles and Attila. In 1973, Billy signed with Columbia Records after he was pursued by then-label executive Clive Davis. That same year he released his first album under his new label, Piano Man, which included the hit single 'Piano Man'. The song has become arguably Billy Joel's most popular single to date.

It was the release of The Stranger (1977) that launched Billy Joel into superstardom. The album included the singles 'Just the Way You Are', 'Movin' Out' and 'Only the Good Die Young', each of which reached the Top 25 on the Billboard charts. Joel won his first Grammy in 1979 for the single 'Just the Way You Are.' He won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Even with all of his success, it wasn't until the single 'It's Still Rock and Roll to Me' off of 52nd Street (1978) that Joel had a #1 single. Over his career he has had a total of thirty three Top 40 singles, three of which reached #1.

After 1993's River of Dreams, Joel stopped writing new material for several years, opting to tour and pursue other ventures. In 2001, Joel released Fantasies and Delusions, a collection of classical pieces. Then, in 2007, he released the singles "All My Life" and "Christmas in Fallujah," the first lyrical songs Joel had written in 14 years. According to Allmusic, Billy Joel's work has been heard on stage as well, in the Broadway production of "Movin' Out." The dance-musical uses twenty-six Joel songs and features characters that come from some of his songs. Joel has been married three times and in 2004 married food critic Katie Lee. He has a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, with second wife Christine Brinkley.
