Black Eyed Peas was formed in 1995 by former breakdancers will.i.am and apl.de.ap after the demise of their former act Atban Klann. Recruiting dancer/MC Taboo and backup vocalist Kim Hill, the new group proceeded to record and release Behind the Front in 1998. Both the debut album, as well as their sophomore effort Bridging the Gap were tough sells, competing against the gangsta rap trend that dominated hip hop in the '90s. However, BEP had their first moderate success in "Request + Line," a single spawned off Bridging the Gap. It was their first entry into the Billboard Hot 100, coming in at #64. Hill left the group shortly after the release of the album and was later replaced by Fergie, who completed the group's current line-up.
Alongside the introduction of a new member came many changes to the band's style, which were first seen with their third album Elephunk. The band began to focus less on pure hip hop and introduced dance, funk, and electro elements intro their work. The re-formulation hit gold; Elephunk peaked at #14 on the Billboard 200, went double Platinum in the United States, and spawned their first top 10 single, "Where is the Love?", as well as moderate hits "Hey Mama" and "Lets Get It Started." BEP's fortunes only improved with the 2005 release of Monkey Business. A triple Platinum album, it spawned two #3 hits, "Don't Phunk with My Heart" and "My Humps," the latter their best-selling single to date, and the subject of a Grammy Award. 2009's The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) became the Black Eyed Peas first album to reach #1, and produced their first two #1 singles, "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling."
The Black Eyed Peas have also been known for their popular tours that have seen the band visit countries all across the world. The band is traveling the globe again in 2010 for The E.N.D. World Tour.
