Bob Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. At high school dances, he imitated rock stars like Elvis Presley and Little Richard on the piano. Later he attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and started playing folk and country songs at cafes. He called himself "Bob Dylan," after the late Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Bob dropped out of college in 1960 and moved to New York City. He began writing songs prolifically and released his first album, Bob Dylan, in 1962.
As a songwriter, folk singer, and poet, Dylan has many talents. Famous Dylan songs include "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," and "Like a Rolling Stone." "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" were theme songs of the civil rights movements of the 1960s. With skills in both singing and writing songs, Dylan is a voice for literature and music. He began his "Never Ending Tour" in the late 1980s and has been performing all over the world ever since.
In a 2006 interview with Rolling Stone, Dylan said, "They say, 'Dylan never talks.' What the hell is there to say? That's not the reason an artist is in front of people… I don't want to get harsh and say I don't care. You do care, you care in a big way, otherwise you wouldn't be there. But it's a different kind of connection…It's alive every night, or it feels alive every night…It becomes risky. I mean, you risk your life to play music, if you're doing it in the right way." Dylan prefers to play in small, intimate clubs with great acoustics where everyone can hear the highest quality sounds. Dylan has a huge base of loyal fans. In 2006, his album Modern Times debuted at number one on the US charts and was named "Album of the Year" by Rolling Stone magazine, and in 2009 Together Through Life also reached number one. He released an album titled Tempest in 2012.
