The genesis of Bon Jovi came in 1983 when lead man Jon Bongiovi was working at Power Station Studios, and had recorded a demo tape of the now popular song "Runaway." The song began garnering a lot of airplay, and Bongiovi needed to recruit a full time band. In 1983, Bon Jovi was formed when guitarist Richie Sambora, bassist Alec John Such, drummer Tico Torres, and keyboardist David Bryan joined Bongiovi. The group signed with Mercury Records and released their debut album, Bon Jovi in 1984. The album sold 3.5 million copies worldwide, and soon the band was opening for acts like ZZ Top, the Scorpions, and Kiss.
Their sophomore effort, 1985's 7800° Fahrenheit, was not initially a big seller. However, it didn't matter that the second album fell flat, because the success of the third record completely overshadowed the limited reception of its predecessor. Released in 1986, Slippery When Wet turned the band into an overnight sensation and catapulted them into superstardom. It sold an incredible 26 million copies, letting it reach the coveted diamond certification. Slippery When Wet contains the popular songs "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Wanted Dead or Alive," and "Livin' On a Prayer," which are still enjoyed by Bon Jovi fans to this day.
Their next album, New Jersey, was equally as popular as Slippery When Wet. However, tour after tour was taking its toll, so the group took a brief break between 1990 and 1992. They came back stronger than ever with Keep the Faith, which includes singles like "Bed of Roses," "In These Arms," and "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead." 1995's These Days and 2000's Crush were more modest successes, but still reached platinum and double platinum. By the end of the century, Bon Jovi had received numerous VMA, AMA, and WMA awards, and had released five multi-platinum albums. The 21st century brought two #2 and one #1 albums with Bounce, Have a Nice Day, and Lost Highway.
The band is known for their rigorous tour schedule, and in past years circuits completed included the Slippery When Wet Tour, the New Jersey Syndicate Tour, the Keep the Faith Tour, and the These Days Tour. This fall, Bon Jovi will be celebrating the release of The Circle with another new tour.
