2009/10 NBA Season Preview - Boston Celtics

On paper, the Boston Celtics may have the most talent on any team that will take the floor during the 2009/2010 NBA Season, but questions about health and age surround the 17 time NBA World Champions. The biggest question comes in the form of the "Big Ticket" Kevin Garnett, who only played in 57 games last season due to a severe knee injury. Ainge went out and brought in veteran forward Rasheed Wallace and swingman Marquis Daniels. Wallace will bring a game similar to that of Garnett, his ability to spread the defense, rebound and play tough defense could pay huge dividends off the bench. Daniels comes over from the Indiana Pacers and will serve as the back-up to Rajon Rondo. His ball-handling skills will allow Eddie House to play shooting guard for the second unit and be the instant offense the Celtics need off the bench.

One thing that may be the closest thing to a certainty this season is the Celtics should emerge as the Atlantic Division Champions, as no team comes close to matching their talent. If the Celtics are able to positively answer the injury questions that face them this season, there is also no reason they cannot make it back to the NBA Finals and perhaps hang the 18th banner from the rafter of TD Garden.

After Bill Russell's retirement from the Boston Celtics in 1969, the team once again looked to rebuild their winning ways. It did not take long for them to regain their dominance winning titles in 1974 and 1976 behind players like Dave Cowens and JoJo White. But it was 1979-80 season that brought the Celtics back to the top of the NBA after drafting Larry Bird from French Lick, IN. Along with future hall of fame players Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, Bird helped lead the franchise to three championships beating the Houston Rockets twice (1981, 1986) and Los Angeles Lakers once (1984).

The latest Celtics championship came in 2008 with the new big three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Behind their mantra of "Ubuntu", an African word meaning "Unity", the C's steamrolled their way through the season winning 66 games before fighting their way to the NBA Finals and their 17th title.
