Cabaret is a dark musical based off of the story "Goodbye to Berlin," written by Christopher Isherwood in 1939. This highly successful play has won many awards during each Broadway revival. Some of these awards include a Tony for the Best Musical in 1967, Tonys for the Best Revival of a Musical in 1987 and 1998, as well as many others. This latest revival stars Alan Cumming as the Emcee and Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles. Preview shows began March 21, 2014.
Based on the novella written by Christopher Isherwood in 1939, Cabaret takes place in 1931 Berlin in the Kit Kat Club. With World War I in the past and Hitler's rise on the horizon, this seedy club is an escape from daily life. The play revolves around the lives of Sally Bowles, a young performer, and Cliff Bradshaw, an American writer. Along with these two, there is the colorful Emcee, as well as Herr Schultz and Fraulein Schneider. The show is a gritty musical wherein the audience of the show is essentially the audience at the Kit Kat Club. It is easy to be sucked into the time long passed with this mix of intense romance and entrancing musical performance.
