Celine Dion was born the youngest of fourteen children on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec. A native Canadian, Celine grew up speaking French. Although her family was poor, Dion lived in a happy and musical home. She dreamed of being a performer from an early age and composed her first song, "It Was Only a Dream," with help from her mother and brother when she was just twelve years old. Then one day in late 1981, everything changed. Recording music manager Rene Angelil heard Dion sing, and he immediately focused on making the young performer a star. He was so impressed that he mortgaged his home in order to fund her first record, La Voix du bon Dieu.
The album was an instant success, and Celine Dion quickly became a star in Quebec, her native city. Soon Dion's success spread to other parts of the world as well. She performed and competed in countries such as Japan, France, Australia, and Ireland. When she was eighteen, Dion saw a performance by Michael Jackson and decided that she wanted to become a star like him. She resolved to learn English and worked hard to study the new language. In 1990, she released her first English album, Unison. The album was praised by critics and included the hit songs "(If There Was) Any Other Way," "Unison," and "Where Does My Heart Beat Now." As exemplified in this song, Celine Dion lyrics often discuss love and romance but also cover other areas as well.
Since breaking into the American music scene, Dion has gained superstardom around the world. Her major breakthrough came when she recorded the theme song to the hit Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. The song reached number one on the pop charts and nabbed her both a Grammy and an Academy Award. Celine was at the top of her craft, and her popularity only grew when she recorded the theme song to another hit movie, Titanic. The hit song "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic became the longest charting song of Dion's career. It also helped her albums, such as Let's Talk About Love and These Are Special Times, catapult to the top of the charts. As her career took off, Dion found love and romance. Even though he was 26 years older than her, Celine fell in love with her manager, Rene Angelil. After working together for thirteen years, Rene and Celine got married on December 17, 1994. Their son, René-Charles Dion Angélil, was born in 2001.
In 2002, Celine Dion came back on the scene with the release of A New Day Has Come. Dion was able to recapture and even exceed her previous success. She sold over twelve million copies of the new album. That same year, she announced that she would be performing in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. The show was called A New Day... and was created by Franco Dragone, who also created Cirque Du Soleil. The show ran for 700 performances.
Since the end of A New Day…, Dion has gone back to the studio, releasing two new albums. The first, D'elles, was released on May 21, 2007, and has since been certified double platinum in Canada. Celine's latest English album is Taking Chances, released on November 7, 2007. The album has been a hit, selling three-and-a-half million units worldwide and reaching number one on Canadian charts and number three on U.S. charts. 2007 also saw the release of the Celine Dion greatest hits album My Love: Essential Collection, her first greatest hits album in English. A few months later, in February 2008, Dion embarked on the "Taking Chances" tour in order to promote Taking Chances. In March 2011, Dion began performing in a Las Vegas residency show titled Celine.
