Chance the Rapper released his third major project, Coloring Book, on May 12, 2016. The album was highly acclaimed, receiving a 9.1/10 from Pitchfork, and a 4/5 from Rolling Stone. Coloring Book was described by Financial Times music critic Ludovic Hunter-Tilney as an upbeat gospel rap album “that places gospel choirs and jazzy horns in a modern setting of Auto-Tuned hooks and crisp beats.”
Two singles from Coloring Book were released, “Angels” and “No Problem,” the latter of which featured verses from 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. Other features on the album include Justin Bieber, Future, and Kanye West.
Chancelor Bennett, known to most by his stage name, Chance the Rapper, is a hip hop artist hailing from Chicago, IL. Born on April 16, 1993, Chance the Rapper grew up in West Chatham, a middle-class neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.
Aspiring to be a musician from a young age, Chance the Rapper recorded his first full-length project, 10 Day in 2011 while serving a 10 day suspension from high school. Following the release of the mixtape, Chance the Rapper began to gain a small following.
In 2013, Chance the Rapper released Acid Rap, which quickly racked up over one million downloads. Soon after, a bidding war between major record labels ensued as they all attempted to sign Chance the Rapper to their label. However, Chance declined, and to this day remains independent, an extreme rarity for an artist of his popularity.
