Charlie Wilson is is an American R&B singer born on January 29, 1953 in Tulsa, OK. The son of a church minister, Wilson and his two brothers often sang at their father’s church during Sunday sermons.
Wilson’s older brother Ronnie formed the funk group, The Gap Band in 1967. In 1972 Charlie joined the band and a year late their younger brother Robert joined. Even though the band had previously featured other members, by 1973 the band consisted of only the three Wilson brothers. The band was not very popular in the beginning years, with their album’s Magician’s Holiday and The Gap Band failing to chart.
Thanks to help from record producer Lonnie Simmons, The Gap Band signed with Mercury Records in the late-seventies. In 1979, the band released their third album, also titled The Gap Band, which was produced by Simmons. Two songs from the album, “I’m in Love” and “Shake” both found chart success.
In 1980, The Gap Band reached a new level of stardom with the release of their fifth studio album, The Gap Band III. The record reached the 16th spot on the Billboard Hot 200 and included the hit singles “Yearning for Your Love” and “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me).”
Although The Gap Band would remain a group until the passing of Robert Wilson in 2010, Charlie Wilson launched a solo project in the early 1990s, releasing his debut album, You Turn My Life Around in 1992. Wilson would not release another solo album until 2000 when he released Bridging the Gap. Since then, Wilson has released five more solo albums, with his most recent, Forever Charlie reaching the number two spot on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Over the years, Wilson has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and three NAACP Image Awards, one of which he won for the 2013 album, Love, Charlie. In 2015, Wilson is on tour in support of his album, Forever Charlie.
