About Cheech and Chong

Tommy Chong was born in Edmonton, Alberta in Canada, though he is perhaps best known in the United States for his films. Chong grew up the son of a truck driver and his father eventually moved the family to Calgary. Chong attended school there and he dropped out of high school, but it wasn't because he lacked intelligence. Rather, he quit because his genius was channeled into something outside of studies-Tommy Chong was an accomplished musician. When Chong left high school, he had booked his first job as a professional musician. He has been playing the guitar and singing since he was a young boy, and he knew that music was his calling. Chong founded the first R&B band in Western Canada called "The Shades," and they had one hit song called "Does Your Mama Know About Me" which was later recorded (most notably) by the Jackson Five. While touring with this group, Tommy Chong came across improvisational comedy groups and seeing the groups perform captured his imagination. The musician promptly left The Shades and went to Vancouver, where his brother owned a nightclub. The nightclub soon began comedy nights, featuring Chong and his new improv group "City Works" in addition to local comedic talent. It was here that Tommy Chong met Richard "Cheech" Marin, and history was made.

Cheech Marin was born in Los Angeles, California and was one of eight children. What could be considered ultimately ironic is that Cheech was the son of a long-time LA police officer. Though he was an admitted troublemaker as a child and teenager, he pulled straight A's in high school. Cheech put himself through college working as a janitor and dishwasher, eventually earning his B.A. in English from California State University. Shortly after graduating from college, Cheech Marin decided he wanted to study pottery in Calgary, Canada. Eventually Marin would end up driving a delivery truck near Vancouver, and he decided to try his hand at stage comedy as an alternative. He met Chong at the Vancouver club owned by Chong's brother. After his performance, Tommy Chong offered him a job working as a member of the improv group "City Works". Cheech performed with the group until is disbanded two years later, and then Cheech and Chong teamed up for their first comedy tour.

In the early 1970s, Cheech & Chong ended up in California performing comedy at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles, where a record executive saw their act and offered them a record deal. The pair recorded several albums, and their third album "Los Cochinos" earned them a Grammy Award. Audiences at Cheech and Chong's comedy shows reacted strongly to the pot-smoking humor of pair, as their act emblemized the hippy culture of the 1960s and 1970s. Eventually the two comedians made it into the movies, where their irreverent humor earned them a huge following. Though Cheech and Chong albums were incredibly popular, Cheech & Chong are probably best known for their films. The duo appeared in their first film Up in Smoke in 1978. Many Cheech and Chong movies were to follow, including Nice Dreams, Still Smokin', and Get Out of My Room which is their last film to date. There is a Cheech and Chong new movie currently in production called Cheech and Chong Light Up America, a documentary about their 2008 reunion tour.

After the release of Get Out of My Room in 1985, Cheech and Chong went their separate ways, citing creative differences. Tommy Chong largely continued on with a standup career, though he had a recurring role as Leo in That 70s Show, and guest appearances in several other TV shows and movies. Cheech Marin, on the other hand, re-focused his time on movies and television. He starred as Inspector Joe Dominguez in Nash Bridges, a recurring role in Finding Amy has had a recurring role as David Reyes, the father of Hurley in Lost. Cheech has also done voice acting work, providing voices for such role as Banzai the Hyena in The Lion King, and Ramone in Cars. Like Chong, he has guest starred or had cameos in many other movies and television shows.

In 2003, Cheech and Chong were planning to rejoin forces in a new movie, when Tommy Chong was prosecuted for distributing drug paraphernalia. Chong had been running a website where visitors to the site could purchase bongs; he was convicted and served nine months in prison. After his release planning for the new movie resumed, but it was ultimately canceled. In early June 2008, Chong announced that he would be reuniting with Marin for a new comedy tour and at the end of July, Cheech & Chong jointly announced the fall tour. Since then, the two comedic actors have been cutting it up on stage as if they had never stopped touring with one another. None of the usual awkwardness one expects from reunion shows plagued the two old friends.
