The Chicago Cubs franchise dates back to 1876, but it would 25 years until they would become known as the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago Daily News was the first to pen the name Cubs, but in the prior years the team was known as the White Stockings, Colts and Orphans. At the turn of the century, the Chicago Cubs were among the leagues elite teams. In 1907 they claimed their first World Series title defeating the Detroit Tigers in six games, only to repeat that feat again in 1908 once again knocking out the Detroit Tigers.
Over the remainder of the 1900's, the Chicago Cubs became known as the tough luck team. Whether it was blamed on management, players or the Curse of the Billy Goat, the team has remained without a title since 1908. But in that same period of time, the Chicago Cubs and the city of Chicago have began a love affair unmatched by almost any other city. Chicagoans fill the friendly confines of Wrigley Field the second oldest stadium only behind Boston's Fenway Park every game. During the seventh inning stretch of every home game, fans join together to root, root, root for Chicago Cubs singing the 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame', a tradition started by legendary announcer Harry Caray, who is now immortalized by a statue that was erected in his honor.
Many great players have worn the blue and red of the Chicago Cubs, but you would be remiss not to mention first, Mr. Cub himself, Ernie Banks. Banks played his entire playing career in a Chicago Cubs uniform, winning MVP awards in 1958 and 1959. The eleven time all-star was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. His number 14 is also among the five that have been retired by the Chicago Cubs, with Ron Santo (10), Ryne Sandberg (23), Billy Williams (26) and Jackie Robinson (42).
Now in 2008, Lou Pinella and the Chicago Cubs are looking to make history and win the World Series for the first time in 100 years. Find hard to get Chicago Cubs tickets at TicketNetwork, your source for the best selection of Chicago Cubs tickets!
