About the White Sox

Home Stadium: U.S. Cellular Field

Opened:1991
Seating Capacity:40,615
Address:333 West 35th Street
Chicago, IL 60616

The Chicago White Sox, or White Stockings as they were originally known, took the field as an American League team for the first time on April 22, 1901. The game was the first "official" American League game in history, a game in which the Chicago White Sox defeated the Cleveland franchise 8-2. Now more than a century after that game, and three World Series titles later, the White Sox are still competing among the elite of Major League Baseball as part of the AL Central Division along with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins.

It did not take long for the Chicago White Sox to get into championship form, when in 1906 they captured their first World Series title beating their cross-town rival, the Chicago Cubs. Behind a pitching staff that boasted an ERA of 2.13, they took the series four games to two in the only all-Chicago World Series. In the following years, the team would struggle to regain their championship ways but along the way added important pieces to their roster. By 1917, the Chicago White Sox were ready to compete once again. By the end of the season, they had compiled 100 wins and steamrolled to the World Series to take on the New York Giants. The Chicago White Sox dominated the series and took home their second title in eleven years.

What began next was one of the longest championship droughts for any team, in any sport. Even longer than the well known Boston Red Sox "curse" which lasted from 1918 until 2004, the White Sox were unable to capture their next title until the magical 2005 season. Bullying their way through the regular season behind fiery manager Ozzie Guillen, the Chicago White Sox easily went through the playoffs, only losing one game on the way to the title.

The White Sox continue to look for their next World Series championship under manager Robin Ventura, who was hired to the position prior to the 2012 season.
