About the Reds

Cincinnati, OH 45202

The Cincinnati Reds have a history that dates as far back as 1869 when the franchise became the first all-professional team in baseball. Now nearly a century and a half later, the Cincinnati Reds are among the league's most popular teams. In 2003, the team moved into their brand-new home, the Great American Ball Park, and have continued to build a team to contend for the World Series title every season.

Originally known as the Red Stockings, the Cincinnati Reds left the fledgling American Association and joined the National League in 1890. It was at that time that the franchise shortened its name to just the Cincinnati Reds, the moniker that has stayed with the team since. The team floated around mediocrity for several years; it wasn't until 1919 that the team was able to win their first NL Pennant. They were matched up against the Chicago White Sox in the World Series and were able to win the best-of-nine series in eight games, giving them their first championship.

Perhaps no era in the history of the Cincinnati Reds has been more recognizable than the 1970's and the "Big Red Machine." Under the guidance of Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson, the Cincinnati Reds started the decade with a 102-60 record and reached the World Series. They were outmatched by the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series, dropping in five games, but with most of the core nucleus still intact, it wouldn't be their last time in the series. After a disappointing 1971 season, the Reds regrouped behind a powerful lineup consisting of players like Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Pete Rose. They returned to the series in '72, losing to the Oakland Athletics in seven hard-fought games, but in 1975 the fortunes of the Cincinnati Reds changed. Facing the Boston Red Sox, the Reds were able to capture their first world championship in 35 years. They repeated the feat the following year by dominating the New York Yankees in a four-game sweep.

The team now relies on players like slugger Joey Votto and young pitcher Aroldis Chapman to lead them to victory. It won't be easy though, playing the likes of the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers as part of the very competitive National League Central Division.
