Cleveland Indians - History
The Cleveland Indians franchise is one of the charter franchises of the American League and even pre-date the league itself. The Cleveland Indians are among only four of the charter American League clubs that remain in the same city it was founded, along with the Chicago, Boston and Detroit. Over the more than century long existence of the team, the Cleveland Indians have had many ups and downs but that has never swayed the fans from filling the stands. For the first 15 years as part of the American League, the Cleveland Indians were known by the nicknames Blues (1901), Bronchos (1902-1904) and Naps (1905-1914); the 'Indians' moniker was taken in 1915. It was as the Cleveland Indians that the team was able to capture its first World Series championship in 1920, defeating the Brooklyn Robins five games to two. They would continue to contend for the next few years, but couldn't be able duplicate the same success. It was nearly thirty years later that the Cleveland Indians were once again able to punch their tickets to the World Series this time against the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves). Behind players like Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby and Joe Gordon, the Cleveland Indians went onto defeat the Braves four games to two.
Over the next decade the Cleveland Indians would continue to produce winning teams finishing second to the New York Yankees five times and returned to the World Series in 1954. They dropped that series four games to none to the New York Giants.
The next thirty years were tough for the organization, and they didn't return to the playoffs until 1995. Behind players like Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome and Albert Belle, the Cleveland Indians began a string of dominant years which included two World Series appearances. They squared off against the Atlanta Braves in 1995, where they were overmatched and fell to the Braves in six games. Two years later the Cleveland Indians returned to the series and were within two outs of the title, but the Florida Marlins scraped their way back and took Game 7 and the series.
The Cleveland Indians have returned to glory, and fans continuously fill Progressive Field showing their pride for the 'Tribe'. Find hard to get Cleveland Indians tickets on TicketNetwork, your source for the best selection of Cleveland Indians single game tickets!
