About Coldplay
The band Coldplay formed in 1998 in London. The English rock band is comprised of four members including vocalist/pianist/guitarist Chris Martin, lead guitarist Johnny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Will Champion. The four members of Coldplay met at University College London in September of 2006 and spent their first year of college planning a band. After the formation of Coldplay, the band began playing local gigs for Camden promoters at small clubs. In 1998, Coldplay recorded the Safety EP, but only 500 copies were made; only a small number went on to be sold to the public. After the release of the Safetly EP, Coldplay was signed to the independent record label, Fierce Panda. Once signed to Fierce Panda, Coldplay went on to record another EP called Brothers and Sisters; Brothers and Sisters was recorded over just four days in February of 1999.
After the release of Brothers and Sisters, Coldplay decided that it was time to focus on their debut album. Coldplay went into the studio to record Parachutes. The first singles to be realeased from Parachtues, were "Shiver" and "Yellow." Both singles were very well received and earned Coldplay airplay on MTV. In June 2000, Coldplay set out for their first headlining tour in support of Parachutes. Although Parachutes was not released in the United States until November of 2000, it did go on to reach double-platinum status. Coldplay also received a Grammy Award for Best Alterative Music Album in 2002.
In October 2001, Coldplay went back into the studio to record their second album. Coldplay released A Rush of Blood to the Head in August 2002. Coldplay released several singles from this album including "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." Throughout 2002 and 2003, Coldplay toured extensively covering five continents and co-headlined the Glastonbury Festival. During their widespread touring, Coldplay recorded and released the live DVD and CD, Live 2003. Live 2003 was recorded at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion.
Coldplay took most of 2004 off as it was well needed and well deserved. Coldplay however, did get back into the studio to record and release their third album, X & Y; X & Y was released in theUK & Europe in June 2005. Coldplay's X & Y was a huge success; it became the best selling album of 2005 and rose to #1 in 22 countries worldwide. In 2006, Coldplay began recording for their most recently anticipated album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which they are current preparing to go out on tour in support of. Coldplay is set to release Viva la Vida on June 17, 2008.
