Coldplay came together as a band during the 1990s in London. The English rock band has a total of four members, including Chris Martin, Johnny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion. The future bandmates met at University College London and spent their first year of college fleshing out their band ideas. After the formation of Coldplay, the band began playing locally at small pubs and clubs. They released Safety EP in 1998. 500 copies of the album were made but only a small number went on to be sold to the public. After the release of Safety EP, Coldplay signed with Fierce Panda, a record label. After that, Coldplay went on to record another EP called Brothers and Sisters in 1999.
After the release of Brothers and Sisters, the band released a third EP called The Blue Room before they truly began to focus on creating their first official album, Parachutes. The first singles to be released from Parachutes were "Trouble" and "Yellow." Both singles were very well received and earned the band airplay on MTV. In 2001, Coldplay returned to the studio to record their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. The album appeared in stores in August 2002, and the band released several singles including "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." Throughout 2002 and 2003 the band toured extensively, covering five continents. During their widespread touring, Coldplay recorded and released the live DVD and CD, Live 2003. Live 2003 was recorded at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia.
Coldplay took most of 2004 off, as a rest was well needed and well deserved. The members of Coldplay did get back into the studio to record and release their third album, X & Y; X & Y was released in European and UK markets in June 2005. Coldplay's 2005 album was a huge success and it became the best selling album of 2005 worldwide. In 2006, Coldplay began recording for their fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. When it was released in 2008, the album was a hit all over the world. Coldplay has won Grammy Awards for Viva la Vida, and the singles "Violet Hill" and "Viva la Vida" both tore across the airwaves in many different countries. The alternative rock group spent a good portion of 2008 and 2009 touring the country in support of the new album. Coldpaly released their latest album, Mylo Xyloto in 2011. Two of its songs, "Paradise" and "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," earned Grammy nods.
