The Dallas Mavericks were not the first professional basketball franchise in Dallas, as over ten years before their inaugural season, the city was home to the Dallas Chaparrals of the ABA. Competing with the NBA was a tall order for the ABA and in 1973 the Chaparrals left Dallas to become the San Antonio Spurs. The ABA would eventually merge with NBA, but Dallas was left without a franchise for seven years. In 1980, the Dallas Mavericks joined the NBA as its newest expansion team. After the growing pains of being an expansion team, the Dallas Mavericks were able to reach the NBA Playoffs in only their fourth year in the league. By 1985, the Dallas Mavericks became true contenders with players like Rolando Blackman, Detlef Schrempf and Mark Aguirre leading the way. In 1986, they posted a then franchise best record of 55-27 but were eliminated in the first round of the postseason that year by the Seattle Supersonics. From 1985 to 1988, the Dallas Mavericks were one of the best teams each year and in 1988 were one game from qualifying for the NBA Finals, but lost in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The early 1990's saw a steep decline for the Dallas Mavericks as they became the among the leagues worst. The Dallas Mavericks desire to win never wavered though as through the draft added players like Jamal Mashburn, Jason Kidd and Jimmy Jackson who they hoped to bring them back to prominence. Although improved, the team was unable to reach contender status. The turning point for the franchise was when internet entrepreneur Mark Cuban purchased the team in 2000. His excitement and desire pumped new life into the fledgling franchise. Over the following years the Dallas Mavericks built their team around superstar Dirk Nowitzki and by 2006 they advanced to somewhere they had never been before, the NBA Finals. Unfortunately for the Dallas Mavericks they ran into a Miami Heat team that featured two of the league's best in Shaquille O'Neal and Dwayne Wade. The Dallas Mavericks lost the series in six games.
