Dancing With the Stars is a descendent of the United Kingdom television program Strictly Come Dancing, itself a re-imagining of an earlier UK dance competition show. The parent show first debuted in May 2004 to ratings sufficient enough for the British Broadcasting Corporation to export it to other countries. The number of countries carrying a version of the show has risen to 31 since DWTS debuted in Australia on October 5, 2004. The show began in the United States on June 1, 2005, and ran until July. The show has since been extended to ten weeks.
The show, as its title suggests, pairs up a celebrity entertainer with a professional dancer. Over the course of the show, the professional works with the celebrity to teach different forms of dancing, and the couples then perform these dances before a live studio and TV audience and three judges: Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli. The judges' scores, combined with votes from the audience at home, determine which of the teams will go home that week. Over the course of nine weeks, the teams are pared down until three are left for the finale, where the winner is decided. The series tapes at CBS Television City in Los Angeles, California.
The Dancing With the Stars stage show began on December 19, 2006, one year (and three seasons) after the television program began in the United States. Like the television series, it features a number of celebrity-professional duos dancing in a number of genres.
