David Copperfield was born David Seth Kotkin on September 16, 1956 to Hyman and Rebecca Kotkin in Metuchen, New Jersey. Copperfield started performing magic at the age of twelve, and become the youngest person ever admitted to the Society of American Magicians. He taught a course in magic at New York University at the age of 16, and at 18 won a lead role in the Chicago-based musical The Magic Man. It was after being cast for this role that David Kotkin took up his more familiar stage name David Copperfield. At age 19, Copperfield had a show at the Pagoda Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Among Copperfield's best known illusions are the vanishing of the Statue of Liberty, the disappearance of volunteers followed by reappearance in unusual locations, levitating over the Grand Canyon, flying, and walking through the Great Wall of China. David Copperfield has also performed several escapes, including one from Alcatraz prison.

In addition to his live events, David Copperfield has had a series of TV specials over the years that saw him perform many of his most well known illusions and escapes. Copperfield also portrayed the character Ken the magician in the 1980 horror film Terror Train. In 1982, Copperfield founded "Project Magic," which helps disabled patients rehabilitate lost or damaged dexterity skills by using sleight-of-hand magic physical therapy. The program, accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Assocation, is now in use in 1100 hospitals throughout 30 countries. David Copperfield now performs regularly in the Hollywood Theater at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
