David Copperfield was born David Seth Kotkin on September 16, 1956, to Hyman and Rebecca in Metuchen, New Jersey. Copperfield started performing magic at the age of twelve and became the youngest person ever admitted to the Society of American Magicians. He taught a course in magic at New York University at the age of 16 and at 18 won a lead role in the Chicago-based musical The Magic Man. It was after being cast for this role that Kotkin took up his stage name. At age 19, he had a show at the Pagoda Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii.
