Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, Dawes formed out of band Simon Dawes in 2009. The new group featured brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, as well as Wylie Gelber and Alex Casoff. Their first album, North Hills, was released that August. Recorded in and featuring the Laurel Canyon sound, the album took influences from Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell.

Finding success with their debut, the band has continued to build on that with their subsequent albums, Nothing Is Wrong (2011), Stories Don't End (2013), and All Your Favorite Bands (2015). Casnoff left the band in late 2010 and was replaced with Tay Strathairn. The band began heavy touring in 2010 and has performed live every year since then.
