Deftones is an alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, CA by vocalist Chino Moreno, lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and drummer Abe Cunningham in 1988. The three were friends in high school and began holding jam sessions. For a short time, the band featured Dominic Garcia as the bassist, but he was soon replaced by Chi Cheng.
After recording a four track demo, the band soon found themselves playing club shows throughout California and opening for bands such as Korn. Eventually, Deftones caught the eye of Maverick Records, who signed them to a recording contract.
Deftones recorded their debut album, Adrenaline at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle. The album was released on October 3, 1995. Although the album was not very successful, it did help the Deftones gain a dedicated fanbase. The band's second album also failed to find success, peaking at number 29 on the Billboard 200.
Deftones turning point came in 2000 with the release of White Pony, which featured the band's most popular single to date, "Change (In the House of Flies)." The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and "Change (In the House of Flies)" reached number three on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
After releasing two more popular albums in the 2000s, tragedy struck the band in 2008. Chi Cheng was involved in serious car accident that left him in a semi-comatose state up until his death in 2013, which was due to cardiac arrest.
Following Cheng's accident, Deftones enlisted Sergio Vega as the band's bassist. The band's 2010 album, Diamond Eyes was created with a positive outlook due to the band's members coping with Cheng's accident.
To date, Deftones have released a total of eight studio albums.
