About Denis Leary

An Irish comedian, Denis Leary was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1957. After college, he spent a few years teaching humor writing classes while performing in Boston comedy clubs on the side. Hoping to expand his entertainment career, he moved to New York City to focus on standup comedy. In the 1980's, Denis starred in a few comedy skits for MTV, and people loved his angry humor. Over time, he developed a stage persona who ranted and raved about almost everything. According to a Denis Leary biography on TV Guide, "This manic, chain-smoking actor made his first big impression as a hilariously angry stand-up comic in the early '90s with his one-man show." After Denis released his debut album, No Cure for Cancer, tickets for his shows sold out quickly.

Venturing into the world of literature, Denis recently wrote a best seller called Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat Loud Lazy and Stupid. Written under the name of "Dr. Denis Leary," the book vents about the state of Americans today, and no subject is off-limits. Although his jokes might offend sensitive people, comedy fans think Leary is hilarious. He also writes parody songs, and audiences enjoy Denis Leary lyrics to "Life's Gonna Suck" and other songs from the albums Lock 'n Load and Merry F#%$in' Christmas. Along with his band, The Enablers, Leary sings sardonic tunes like "Elvis and I" and "Traditional Irish Folk Song" to spice up his standup routine.

In addition to comedy, Denis Leary has always been interested in firefighters. He created the Leary Firefighters Foundation in 2000 after his cousin died in a warehouse fire. A nonprofit organization, the foundation has raised over $8 million to support fire departments in Boston, Worcester, and New York. In 2004, the Irish celebrity helped to create a TV show that mixes drama and dark humor. Playing on FX Networks, Rescue Me stars Mr. Leary as Tommy Gavin, an alcoholic firefighter who works on 62 Truck in NYC. In March of 2009, Denis and his co-stars embarked on the Rescue Me Comedy Tour to help promote the show.
